ok, so, i see people posting on where they will be its a Time reference, and a street? I have not been to BM yet, and I don't know how to pick a place to camp, or will i just get assigned when i show up? I'd kinda like to camp in the 9:00 zone by the red light as I am Poly. however I don't want that to be my only experience at BM by any means. So, im looking for advice. Should i just show up and take what fate gives me, and be down for whatever adventure that is? OR, try to be more picky about where I get placed... ? my friends and I rented a small RV that we plan to try to decorate some. I don't want to be by kids, as We tend to be late night people....
Advice?
It would also be nice to meet up with some so-cal burners to help me work out logistics of food water decorations, and what to wear....

Re: its my first time, be gentle... for now.
Tue, May 6, 2008 - 9:26 PMSo adorable, the virgins!
Drewcifer, go to the BM website and peruse the themecamp listings. There's a themecamp that's specifically supportive of the poly lifestyle that you might be interested in.
Or, if you'd rather camp on your own (ie, NOT in a themecamp) that's super easy. Just show up, pick a spot and... camp. Truly. It's pretty darn easy. Well, that part is, anyway.
Now, go read your survival guide, then read it again. Once more. Begin your packing list and add more light-up stuff for at night. I won't want to run over you in my Mutant Vehicle. Seriously. Body Lights at Night = Good Karma.
See you in the dust! -

Wed, May 7, 2008 - 9:01 AMHeidi you forgot to tell them to bring: something old, something new, something borrowed and something blue. Also helps to bring something warm and snuggly in case you near freeze to death one night.
Anyone else think there should be an "American Dream Gated Subdivision" for all the RVs this year?

Re: its my first time, be gentle... for now.
Wed, May 7, 2008 - 10:11 AMYou can camp anywhere you want as long as it's not reserved for a theme camp. All that will be explained and you'll get a map showing places where you can and can't set up camp when you drive through the gate. No need to pick the red light district simply because you're poly. In reality, all of Burning Man with the obvious exception of Kidsville is a red light district. Consenting adults are consenting adults no matter where you meet them on the playa and you will meet them everywhere and at anytime during your stay. The operative word is consenting. The overwhelming consensus of the BM community is that it has no toleration for predators and overly aggressive types. Those types aren't treated kindly and they have no place to hide and are generally hounded and eventually arrested or kicked out.
"Should i just show up and take what fate gives me, and be down for whatever adventure that is?"
That's it, in a nutshell. An open mind. Burning Man is like no other place. Just open your mind, relax, chill and take what comes. Trying to over think or over plan especially as a virgin may be a recipe for disappointment. Your first Burning Man just might be the most mind blowing fun you will ever have in your life. It seems that those peeps I've met who have hated their first and usually only trip to the playa showed up with a whole boatload of expectations and preconceptions about what they should see and experience based on what they've heard and read. One just can't truly grasp the event until one experiences it firsthand. It's hard to release your mind from all you've heard and read but give it a try anyway.
